ScoglieraViva. Sculpting the Sea.
An open-air museum to visit 365 days a year!
The long-awaited appointment with sculpture, sun and sea is back! As a matter of fact, this year the biennial international outdoor sculpture prize ScoglieraViva will take place in Caorle, a well-known historic town overlooking the Adriatic sea. Three artists will work for 10 days (from 21st to 30th June 2018), under the eyes of citizens, tourists and visitors, to transform the rocks of the breakwater cliff into real works of art! The names of the 3 sculptors, selected by a jury of experts, were announced on the afternoon of Friday, June 1st:
Markus Wüste, Germany
Work: An air mattress sculpted in original size that follows the shape of the rock like it follows the waves in the sea.
Federico Ellade Peruzzotti, Italy
Work: A “restoration” project of the Euganean trachyte that will transform the stone from natural to artificial, making it clear that there was a human intervention.
Sangam Vankhade, India
Work: A miniature version of an Indian heritage site to preserve its memory, attempting to bring out the neglect these sites suffer at the hands of urbanization.
The cliff of Caorle: one of the most beautiful waterfronts in Italy!
The picturesque historical centre of Caorle, reminiscent of the nearby Venice, is protected from the sea by a beautiful cliff, made up of large boulders of Euganean trachyte that, over the years, has become one of the most beautiful waterfronts in Italy thanks to the ScoglieraViva Prize. The competition was born in 1993; at first it took place every year and then every two years. The various international artists that have followed have left their mark in this little Venice, giving visitors the experience of admiring a museum and breathing the scent of the sea at the same time!
The International Prize “ScoglieraViva 2018. Sculpting the Sea”
214 sculptors from all over the world applied to the 19th edition of the ScoglieraViva international prize! Japan, China, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, Iran just to name a few! “This year we wanted to give a new impetus to this event making it a ‘top cultural event’, thanks to the collaboration with the Cultural Association MoCA with which we have agreed upon a prestigious jury – declares the Councilor for Tourism Alessandra Zusso – the goal is to make it an internationally renowned prize which, thanks to its cultural aspect, will become a driving force for our tourist events. The wide participation from different countries confirms that the choices we made were the right ones!” On Friday, June 1st, the jury has selected, among the candidates, the three winning artists who, in addition to winning a prize money of 2000 euros each, will have the honor of sculpting their project on the cliff during the last ten days of the month on June. The event will end on June 30th with the official presentation of the works that will enrich the beauty of the promenade and will be added to the other 100 rocks carved in the past editions of the Prize.
The jury of experts
Paolo De Grandis – art curator, creator of international exhibitions; Simone Pallotta – curator of public and urban art; Matteo Zauli – director of Carlo Zauli Museum in Faenza.
